Sommerabend
Summer Evening

Heine

Darkening, the summer evening lies
Over forest and green meadow.
Hazy moonlight from blue skies,
Soothing in its golden yellow.

There’s a cricket by the river,
Something’s moving in the water;
And the wanderer hears splashing,
Then some breathing in the stillness.

All alone, there by the river
A charming elfin-girl is bathing,
Her arms and shoulders, pale and lovely,
Shimmer in the golden moonlight.
